What is IT Change Management?

Change Management is an IT practice designed to minimize risks and disruptions in the services provided by the IT team.

What are the most common types of changes?

  •    Standard changes: are those pre-approved, low-risk changes that are made frequently and follow documented processes, such as adding memory or creating a new instance of a database.


  •    Regular changes: are non-emergency changes that require additional review and approval by the Change-Advisory Board (CAB)—for example, migrating to a new Data Center or making performance upgrades.

  •    Emergency changes: are those that arise from an unexpected bug or threat that must be addressed immediately, such as deploying a security patch or dealing with a server outage.

Change management according to ITIL v4

What's ITIL? It's an acronym for Information Technology Infrastructure Library, a set of detailed practices for IT teams that focus on aligning IT services (Concerning IT Service Management -ITSM-) and business needs. When talking about ITIL v4 or ITIL4, it refers to a recent version of this library.

Software development plays an essential role within all companies; that's why it's increasingly relevant to follow efficient and adaptive Change Management practices that provide dynamic environments.

This way, the CAB will become a trusted advisor responsible for monitoring change trends, developing effective team practices, and coordinating actions across teams. 1. Adopt practices that transform the "change" into a new standard process

For many IT teams, making all these changes is just that, without noticing that it represents a benefit for them. It's advisable to introduce changes systematically to reduce the piling of changes and make them easier to implement.

  •    Classify change requests as "standard," "normal," and "emergency," or by service level and dependencies.

  •    Route change requests through the right Jira workflow path, such as pre-approvals for standard changes and additional workflows for regular high-risk changes.

  •    Notify assigned stakeholders of high-risk changes that require additional review.

  •    Interact with external systems through webhooks, such as Slack, Workato, or Microsoft Teams.

E.g., providing reviews and feedback, iterating in real-time until the change is implemented.
