Finally, Atlassian has announced the general availability of Rovo! While some see it as an evolution of Atlassian Intelligence, Rovo is actually a standalone product that brings new features applicable to various aspects of the work environment. In this blog post, we'll explain Rovo, its key features and benefits, the concept of Rovo agents, and how to use it in your daily routine worklife.

Just days before the highly anticipated keynote at Atlassian Team '24 Europe, Rovo's general availability was announced, building on its earlier reveal at the same event in Las Vegas. This time, Atlassian Co-Founder Mike Cannon-Brookes officially launched Rovo. This new AI-powered business companion promises to be a game-changer in the workplace:

Rovo's introduction marks a new phase for Atlassian's platform. First, we were introduced to Atlassian Intelligence, which helped users translate and summarize text, conduct searches, create issues, and more to improve efficiency. Now, Rovo goes a step further as a standalone tool that can interact with Atlassian tools and broader workplace environments. To understand it better, let's dive into some key insights.

What makes Rovo so unique? Why is it promising such an impact in project management and business collaboration? In short, Rovo is designed to tackle the modern challenges of managing distributed teams across the globe or within national borders, enhancing productivity, and enabling intelligent automation and seamless integration.

Understanding Atlassian Rovo: Five key benefits for businesses

While having an AI-powered tool sounds promising, is Rovo really built for enterprise teams? Implementing Atlassian Rovo offers numerous advantages, particularly for companies managing distributed teams or complex projects.

Let’s examine the primary benefits more closely to help you decide if Rovo is suitable for you and your team:

  1. Rovo improves communication among teams located in different geographic areas. Real-time communication and automatic updates ensure that all team members stay informed no matter where they are, making collaboration smoother and more effective.

  2. Rovo's features boost productivity, enhance decision-making, and save time. With automation and a user-friendly interface, teams eliminate repetitive tasks and focus on activities that bring more value to the business, all while saving time.

  3. Rovo leverages Atlassian Intelligence to harness company data, transforming complex sets into personalized insights, which speeds up decision-making and promotes a more agile way of working.

  4. Additionally, Rovo utilizes Atlassian's Teamwork Graph, a system that integrates data from Atlassian tools and compatible SaaS apps. This feature provides a comprehensive view of your organization's strategic goals, knowledge, teams, and projects.

  5. Rovo also offers advanced search capabilities, such as semantic and real-time indexing. This allows users to search multiple tools simultaneously without leaving context, combining results from Jira, Confluence, and connected third-party tools like Google Drive and Microsoft SharePoint.

In essence, Rovo is an AI-powered Atlassian product built on the Teamwork Graph. It optimizes workflows by integrating various Atlassian Cloud apps like Jira and Confluence with external SaaS platforms like Google Drive and Slack. This enables users to search, automate tasks, and collaborate in real time, streamlining information retrieval and improving team productivity, and making enterprises winning.

What is the Teamwork Graph?

The Teamwork Graph is a solution resulting from two decades of research and development. It offers a comprehensive understanding of team collaboration and leverages real-world experience and software insights to map how work flows within teams across various departments and business areas.

This system interconnects all facets of an organization, enhancing the user experiences of Atlassian products. It acts as a bridge between users and their data, represented through five key elements: Collaboration, Intelligence, Automation, Analytics, and Extension. This is where Rovo becomes essential, as it harnesses the power of the Teamwork Graph to streamline and optimize team workflows.

What is Rovo?

At this point, we have a solid understanding of Rovo. As defined by Atlassian, Rovo is a knowledge discovery system powered by advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.

It integrates with various data sources, providing comprehensive search results driven by intelligent agents focused on security and privacy features. It enhances existing software tools by unlocking the full potential of company knowledge and data, efficiently supported by specialized agents tailored to different contexts and needs.

This new technology empowers users by leveraging Atlassian Intelligence and 20 years of team collaboration insights. These agents offer additional complementary features, which is why it’s important to differentiate Rovo from other tools in Atlassian’s ecosystem.

Differences between Rovo and Atlassian Intelligence

In short, Atlassian Intelligence focuses on enhancing the core functionalities of Atlassian products. At the same time, Rovo extends these capabilities across multiple tools and sites, offering broader productivity and organizational efficiency.

  •    Atlassian Intelligence is embedded within the Premium and Enterprise editions of products like Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Trello, and Atlassian Analytics. It delivers AI-powered features such as summaries, editing, and natural language search, designed to boost productivity and efficiency within these platforms.

  •    On the other hand, Rovo is a standalone product powered by Atlassian Intelligence, designed to integrate with Atlassian Cloud products and other SaaS apps. Rovo tackles more complex use cases, streamlining tasks across different tools and improving team productivity and collaboration. Unlike the more targeted enhancements of Atlassian Intelligence, Rovo operates across multiple products and sites, offering more advanced and extensive functionalities.

What features does Rovo have?

Atlassian’s new product, Rovo, is designed with three core actions in mind: Search, Learn, and Act. These actions are supported by key features that make it a powerful tool for optimizing how teams access information and streamline their workflows. Here’s a deeper look into what Rovo offers:

  •    Rovo search: This feature allows users to search across various enterprise data sources, both Atlassian-based and third-party, enabling centralized and personalized results through Rovo Enterprise Search. Rovo integrates with external providers, allowing businesses to index unique enterprise data sources for more comprehensive search results.

  •    Knowledge cards: This function delivers a quick snapshot of the most relevant information related to a search. It enables faster decision-making backed by data, offering insights into teams, projects, goals, and decisions with just one glance. For example, here, you can look up for teammates information within your organization:

  •    Topics: This feature helps users quickly understand specific project-related terms, acronyms, and language used within the company’s Atlassian and third-party solutions. Highlighted terms provide definitions and connect users to relevant people, teams, projects, and goals for deeper understanding.

  •    Rovo chat: An AI-powered personal assistant designed to help with problem-solving, task completion, and brainstorming. Rovo Chat works across internal and third-party content, respecting organizational permissions, and can suggest next steps based on enterprise data, making it a versatile tool for real-time collaboration.

  •    Rovo agents: One of the most exciting features, Rovo Agents extend the platform’s capabilities with custom-built or out-of-the-box extensions designed to fit each organization’s needs. These agents automate repetitive tasks and support specialized work areas like Budgety—an Atlassian Marketplace app that manages budgets and tracks costs in Jira.

Budgety, a Rovo agent:

A simple solution that allows entering and monitoring costs, categorizing them as direct or indirect, and expenses as CAPEX and OPEX, and linking them to projects and issues of all kinds to measure the impact that this generates on the established budget in real-time and in a very simple way.

One of the key features of Budgety, available in the Atlassian Marketplace and working as a Rovo agent, is its predictive capabilities. It can identify users with the highest budget costs, find recurring budget costs, and estimate when the budget will be exhausted. This allows you to take proactive measures and stay in control of your budget. In addition, Budgety can perform detailed budget analysis and more, making it a powerful tool for budget management.

Budgety is able to estimate when the budget of choice will be exhausted and forecast based on that.

If you want to know more about these use cases, we'll soon publish a downloadable guide explaining it. You can also watch this video, where we tell you more:
