How to turn Atlassian stack prices to your advantage

Atlassian announced a pricing policy change increasing on different ranges, depending on the hosting mode and user tier. On the right time, we published this post with different keys to turn this situation to your advantage.
 
Atlassian sent an email to all of their customers communicating a change on their pricing policy increasing on ranges from 10% to 25% depending on the hosting mode (Server vs. Cloud) and user tier, on the following table, it's summarized the scope of products and apps affected:

Data Center, Atlassian Stack, and professional services (TAM and Premier Support) remain unchanged.

This price change was effective on October 12, 2018. From that date all new orders and quotes are bear the new prices independently of whether they are for new licenses, renewals, or upgrades.

The hidden advantages

Customers who acted promptly turned this price surge to their advantage. But to do so, they had to understand Atlassian licensing policies properly, to take the right course of action.

Of course, we’re aware very few customers can keep up with the pricing policies of all their vendors – that’s precisely why we offered this advices at the right time.

6 tips that shortcuted your way to informed decision making and minimized Atlassian-related costs:

1. Tell apart Atlassian Products from Apps

It was REALLY important to discern that price changes only affected the Atlassian products and apps listed in the above table. Marketplace apps were not governed by the policy – but their makers may choose to follow Atlassian and modify their prices as well. 

2. Move renewals forward

If there was pending or upcoming renewals, it was time to get a quote before the new prices entered into force. Properly planned, that decision didn’t meant rushing things: people could made the decision before October 12, 2018, and launch the renewal on early 2019. This action gave room to allocate the expense to 2019. Eureka!
 

3. Renew for three years

Who knows how long the new prices will last? Is always better (depending on each case, of course) to renew the entire Atlassian stack of the company for up to three years at the current price and set it in stone in your expenses.
 

4. Upgrade to Data Center

Taking the price surge, some Data Center user tiers are cheaper or comparable to Server. It is always a good choice to go for Atlassian Data Center.
 

5. Buy new licenses sooner

If you’re considering buying either Atlassian products for the first time or additional instances, this was a great opportunity. All transactions made after October 12, 2018 have a cost up of 25% more.
 

6. Be sure to made the transaction at the right date

Again, to watch the calendar very closely and don’t let days slip through your fingers was key. These was the dates to be considered as per Atlassian’s official e-mail, dated on September 12, 2018: 

October 11, 2018 Last date to get Atlassian orders or quotes with the current prices
October 12, 2018 New prices will go into effect. Any new order or quote will bear the new prices
January 9, 2019 Since Atlassian orders and quotes have a validity of 90 days, this is the deadline to execute them with prices prior to October 12
